It is simply a way of charging for internet services based on the amount the service is used. There are several methods of charging that have been used over the years, including per-minute for 0845 dialup and flat rate. With flat rate tariffs, most customers will use the internet very little and a few use it a lot. The change to usage based charging is happening all over the world as it is seen as a fairer system and more closely reflects the costs of providing the service. It stops the majority of typical users subsidising the heavy users.
We operate fixed and variable tariffs. Both types have an allowance included in the monthly fee. With fixed usage tariff extra usage is carried over to the next month (up to a limit). With variable usage tariff extra usage is charged on top at a higher rate (only available with Direct Debit).
If your usage exceeds the usage level in the tariff we send an email. You can adjust at what level we will email you. We have a range of tariffs, including pay as you go and fixed usage.
Customers on pay as you go tariffs pay for any usage over the amount included in the tariff at top up rates. Under usage on pay as you go tariffs carries forward to the following month up to a limit of 1GB. (from June 2007)
Customers on fixed tariffs have a fixed bill. Any over usage is carried forward to the next month - up to a limit of 10GB. If the 10GB limit is exceeded we will contact you and you can choose a suitable way to bring the carry over down within 10GB. This could be changingto another usage tariff level (even if only for a few months), or paying for topup. If you exceed 20GB though, we will automatically invoice topup usage to bring you within the 10GB usage level (since June 2007).
Logins on a fixed usage tariff that use less than the allocated usage will not carry that under usage forward, so will lose it.
Logins on a variable (pay as you go) usage tariff that use less than the allocated usage carry forward up to 1GB to the next month. (From June 2007). This does not accumulate month on month - the total under usage that can be brought forward from a previous month is 1GB.
Customers than have purchased topup usage but not used it all carry forward the under usage to the next month, but not to the month after.
We know that people sometimes want to download large files, CD images, software updates, and so on. These can be many times the normal usage level for a typical user. In most cases the levels of usage we allow, even in our entry level products, will be more than enough to cope, but we do not want to cause concern. This is especially true when you consider that on the fixed usage tariffs you can carry over up to 10GB from one month to the next without penalty. We allow unlimited reasonable night time and weekend downloads, so you can set your computer downloading over night or at the weekend and not have to worry at all about the usage levels.
We have records of the amount you upload (what you send to the internet) and download (what comes from the internet to you). These are tracked for every hour of every day. We add up how much you have downloaded during peak hours, and this is your peak usage. Peak hours are 09:00-18:00 Monday to Friday. We do not charge for overnight and weekend usage, or what you upload.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes of data. A byte is typically a character (letter, digit, symbol), and many thousands of bytes would make up a picture. For example, if you downloaded a whole photo album of images taken with a good quality 5 megapixel digital camera, you would get around 400 pictures in a gigabyte. Most home/family internet users will use well under a gigabyte in total in a month.
For most customers, usage based charging will make very little difference to price from our old tariffs. A typical home users will still pay a flat fee and use less than the levels we have set. However, usage based charging does have one immediate benefit - speed. The speed of the line used to be a major factor in costs, and now it is not. As such, we can provide Max (up to 8Mb/s) services at no extra cost. These higher speeds are subject to line quality and length, as ever.
We are not withdrawing the old pricing for existing customers for the time being, so you can carry on as you are if you like. However, the old tariffs did have limits in other ways - if these are exceeded, or usage is excessive and exceeds fair usage, then you may be asked to change to a new usage based tariff.
You can change your usage level tariff whenever you like - the change takes effect on your next bill and applies for the whole of the period billed. You can change your mind about the next billed tariff up to the point the bill is produced (e.g. 1st of the month). Change in the grade of service (e.g. standard/premium) is a regrade and any increase in price takes effect when the regrade takes place. The control pages for your broadband line allow you to change tariff level on line.
If you have selected a pay as you go based tariff, we charge for all extra usage each month. Charges are worked out in 0.01GB steps. You can select to have any of the tariffs charged in this way rather than carrying over any usage to the next month.
Under usage, up to 1GB, is carried over to the following month on the pay as you go tariffs. (Since June 2007).
If you are billed on a different billing cycle (e.g quarterly or four weekly) then when you are billed, the usage allowance billed is applied to each calendar month or part covered by the billing period in proportion to the part of the month covered. This applies even to monthly billed customers on their first bill where the bill covers part of their first calendar month.
