Closed User Groups

Our closed user group (CUG) service is one of the new services launched in Nov 2005 to provide a service to corporate customers with multiple sites.

The service

The service is an extra facility which we provide on a number of broadband lines. The facility allows lines to have no access to the internet but to have access to other broadband lines in the same company. Typically one of the sites will also have internet access on the same line and provide proxy and/or email gateway to the branch offices.

How it works

Each broadband line can be tagged with a closed user group ID. This is set the same for all of the lines in a company. Each site can also be tagged as restricted. If restricted then no traffic can be sent to or from the line that is not from or to a line also in the closed user group. If not restricted then traffic can be sent to or from the line from or to anywhere. Normally a head office is marked unrestricted and all branch offices are marked restricted. The restriction stops traffic from other broadband lines and the internet, even if spoofed source addresses were used. This normally removes the need for any firewall at each branch office.

Hosted servers

In addition, we can also set up a specific VLAN on our hosted server LAN within the data centre. This can allow a hosted server to send traffic to  or from any of the restricted sites, but only if on the right VLAN. Port restrictions on our network switches ensure that this is only from the specific port(s) connected to your servers, and so stop any direct access from the internet or other hosted servers. With a hosted server providing email, web proxy, and DNS to your sites, you can make it so all broadband lines in your company have restricted closed user group status and so do not need firewalls at all.

IP Addresses

It is important to realise that the system uses proper routed IP addresses in the same way as our normal lines. To avoid problems trying to connect in to a site using NAT, the sites will normally be allocated an appropriate block of real IP addresses (IP4 and/or IP6). We do not route RFC1918 private addresses (which could clash between customers).

Costs

It is yet to be decided if there will be a specific additional cost for the CUG service. We are considering an option to aggregate usage on restricted sites for a monthly fee, but this is not yet finalised.

Please note that the usage of each line will be accounted for in our usage based tariffs in exactly the same way as any normal line - there is no difference in the usage allowances or usage costs for broadband lines. Only lines on our new usage based tariffs may take part in the closed user group service.

Please note that hosted usage "internet access" will also include any access to CUG sites if on the same port (i.e. VLAN tagged). However, you can opt for the CUG traffic to be provided on a dedicated port (untagged if you wish). Usage on this port is not metered as part of your hosted service. You will obviously need a server with multiple ethernet ports if you want dedicated CUG traffic on one port and general internet access on the other. You may have multiple CUGs VLAN tagged if communicating with separate closed user groups (unlikely).

Usage charges for transit connectivity to other racks in the data centre is provided on the same basis. I.e. if the link includes CUG traffic and internet traffic the whole lot counts as your internet access usage, but a separate cable can be run for dedicated CUG traffic only at no usage cost.
